Johnson Controls Announces Technology Initiative
Johnson Controls has entered into an agreement with CBRE, World Resources Institute and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) to test and deploy an open-source, web-based energy analysis tool to identify energy efficient retrofit opportunities in commercial buildings. The initiative is part of the Johnson Controls and CBRE Innovation Lab, which was established three years ago to evaluate, connect and leverage products, services and energy data to create value for occupiers and investors of real estate.
Computer Vision At The Edge: Where It?s Headed In 2019
2018 has seen great advances in computer vision capabilities. The accuracy of object detection and facial recognition continues to improve, and the number of readily available options based on state-of-the-art deep learning technologies including convolutional and recurrent neural networks continues to increase. The improvements come at a cost – an increase in the complexity and processing requirements of the technologies.
Pulling It All Together: Building An SOC
At the core of any organization’s security plan is where all the individual security elements come together. Some call this the security operations center (SOC), some call this a command center, but all of these have one thing in common: they serve as the nucleus of a security plan that brings multiple sensors, decision-making functions, and visual representations together into a single pane of glass view for operators and management. The most daunting task for a lot of these security leaders is actually bringing it all together.
Virtualization And Hyperconvergence: A Primer
The physical security world is constantly evolving. The migration from analog to digital triggered significant changes in both the market and required skill set to support these newer technologies. As we usher in the new year, additional changes are on the horizon. While virtualization is not a new concept, hyperconverged infrastructure is becoming more and more prevalent in the security market. This primer will focus on the benefits associated with virtualization and how it applies to hyperconverged infrastructure in the security industry.
Important Criteria When Selecting Turnstile Solutions For Schools
Security professionals throughout the U.S. have one thing in common; they are all working diligently on trying to improve school safety and security.
Enhanced Video Coverage ? Perfect Gift For The Holiday Season
During the holiday season, retailers enjoy increases in store traffic but for loss prevention (LP) managers increases in shoppers and temporary employees make this time of year more challenging. Through this influx of business (and beyond), the LP managers must deal with losses stemming from organized retail crime (ORC), employee theft, and shoplifting. Retail supply chains and online retailer distribution centers also come under greater pressure as more goods are being handled and shipped.
Safety Technology Protects Staff In Credit Unions And Retail Locations
Crime continues to climb at all types of retail establishments – from Jewelers to Convenience Stores to Electronics Retailers to Pharmacies and others. Adding to security concerns is the trend of reducing staff costs by having fewer staff onsite during opening and closing hours, which leaves staff more vulnerable to crime. SafeResource technology works perfectly for all types of retailers to improve safety and provide comprehensive reporting of security protocols being met.
How Smart Homes Take Over The World
Smart homes are the next big thing. You may not realize it yet, but somewhere your day will be easier because of it. Smart home technology is not only impacting the houses its installed into. Its reach stretches to other industries like business, science and even health care. Here is an infographic detailing the numbers and change caused by smart homes. The rapid rate of growth in the smart home industry has an effect on all kinds of industries.

What Lies Ahead For 2019
As you know, security is a fast-paced industry that touches the lives of hundreds of millions of people every day. What we do and what impacts us has the potential to effect organizations, communities, and governments around the globe. This is one of the reasons why a look at the top five trends for the year ahead cannot be taken lightly. After careful consideration, here?s what I think will be impacting our world in 2019.
Taking QSRs To The Next Level With Integrated Surveillance & POS Systems
Fast casual restaurants and quick service restaurants (QSRs) have traditionally installed surveillance cameras to deter crime, encourage safety and improve efficiency. However, despite the availability of less expensive IP digital cameras and DVRs that capture clearer images than ever, these systems often stood alone and were not integrated with any of the other electronic systems used in the industry. Savvy owners and managers now expect digital security cameras to be integrated with existing Point-of-Sale, drive-through order boards and speed-of-service timers.
What?s In A Video Analytic
If we ask Wikipedia about video analytics we get redirected to video content analysis (VCA) and information about the capability of automatically analyzing video to detect and determine temporal and spatial events.
Many different functionalities can be implemented in VCA. Video Motion Detection is one of the simpler forms where motion is detected with regard to a fixed background scene. More advanced functionalities include video tracking and egomotion estimation. Now, I don?t really know what egomotion is but I do understand video tracking.
Drowning In Video Data? How The Security Industry Must Innovate To Provide Real Value
Investment in video surveillance technology continues to increase as technology improves and security equipment becomes more affordable. Companies invest in video surveillance primarily to protect people and property, for both deterrence and more crucially for incident response. While there?s no doubt that the systems can provide a comprehensive video archive, the real challenge is whether these systems allow security and law enforcement personnel to respond quickly and effectively when security breaches occur. In large enterprise systems, entrenched video collection methods have limited effectiveness in real-time situations.
