VideoIQ: Demystifying Self-Learning Video Analytics

Source: VideoIQ | Date: 11/13/2013 Related tags: VideoIQ , Video analytics When speaking of animate vision it is also referred to as response driven learning process where the lessons are learnt from others, learning through corrections and feedback, the more interactions with “teachers”, the faster the learning process. Response and feedback can also come from interactions with the environment. The typical example of a hot stove or a thorn, by injury it is identified as a mistake. Whether through concepts from bootstrap process or from response process, the learning process is continuous. When an object is “seen”, there is a complex and sophisticated neural network that is continuously learning behind the scenes that enables the gift of sight to be taken for granted. VideoIQ introduces the B.R.A.I.N model which will enable cameras that are programmed to mimic this neural network model, which “learns” through interactions with the environment. When a camera is first powered on, its field of view is new and unfamiliar, much like humans in an unfamiliar environment, instinctively attempts to identify everything that seems recognizable in form or function, overtime becoming familiar with the environment recognizing placement. Thus if additional items were to appear in the line of vision, the camera might first classify it as a suspicious object. However should the item be still in the environment over a period of time, the camera will “learn” that it is where it belongs, overriding the initial placement of items. Not only does it “remember” or “learn” […]

(© FlaglerLive) Crews last week installed video cameras on both sides of U.S. 1 between Royal Palms Parkway and Whiteview Parkway to monitor the weight of large trucks. (© FlaglerLive) Not to worry: the ominous-looking spy cameras that have just gone up on both side of U.S. 1 between Royal Palms Parkway and Whiteview Parkway in Palm Coast, are not speed cameras. They’re not even trained at most vehicles. They’re aimed at heavy trucks only, to catch overweight truckers trying to evade the weigh stations either on U.S. 1 or on I-95. The cameras on U.S. 1 went up last week. Another set will be built further north, by the northbound lanes of U.S. 1, opposite the weigh station, as part of the Florida Department of Transportation’s $1.2 million virtual weigh station system that’s been rigging up selected points around the county since last year. Similar cameras have been in place a year at the on-ramp of I-95 north and State Road 100, and at the off ramp from I-95 southbound, onto Palm Coast Parkway. That part of the system cost cameras cost $632,000. A crew at work on U.S. 1 last week. Click on the image for larger view. CSC Continues Acquisition Track With ServiceMesh Deal

John Madden Summary CSC announced more than a year ago that it would reorganize and reinvest in strategic areas to spark additional growth, and the company has been true to its word. The vendor’s recently announced acquisition of ServiceMesh, a 140-person, privately funded cloud management and brokerage company, is CSC’s third deal in a year – made possible by cost-cutting and shedding some business in order to build up resources and free cash. This deal augments CSC’s overall cloud initiatives, particularly in how it accelerates CSC’s internal IP efforts around cloud orchestration and management. Acquisitions focused on building capabilities in strategic growth areas CSC unveiled its acquisition of ServiceMesh as part of its mixed Q2 earnings announcement. All of these deals are to bolster CSC’s IP and capabilities in its strategic growth areas, which include cloud and Big Data/analytics as top priorities. The first two deals were focused on Big Data. First, in October 2012, CSC acquired 42Six Solutions, a software development company specializing in data processing and analytics for US government intelligence agencies and for the US Department of Defense. Secondly, in August 2013, CSC enhanced its Big Data practice with a deal for Infochimps, a small, privately held company known for its automated framework for elastic scaling of Hadoop, NoSQL, and stream processing analytics […]

Can Facial Recognition Really Tell If A Kid Is Learning In Class?

engage sense facial recognition Can cameras read what’s going on in a second grader’s mind? Photo courtesy of EngageSense All of us have had a teacher who had eyes in the back of his or her head. Even while facing the blackboard, they saw everything—every note being passed, every answer being copied, every face being made. Or at least it seemed that way. All they really had to do was guess right a few times about what was going on behind their backs and, well, that is how classroom legends are made. But what if you took all the guessing out of the picture? What if cameras focused on every kid in the class? That’s what a New York company named SensorStar Labs has in mind, although the point would not be to catch miscreants, but rather to help teachers determine when they’ve lost the class. Face time Here’s how it would work. Using facial recognition software called EngageSense, computers would apply algorithms to what the cameras have recorded during a lecture or discussion to interpret how engaged the students have been. Were the kids’ eyes focused on the teacher? Or were they looking everywhere but the front of the class? Were they smiling or frowning? Or did they just seem confused? Or bored? Teachers would be provided a report that, based on facial analysis, would tell them when student interest was highest or lowest. Says SensorStar co-founder Sean Montgomery, himself a former teacher: “By looking at maybe just […]

Embracing The Police Force Of The Future

(CNN) – Contrary to the Hollywood image in movies like “Minority Report,” technology hasn’t served law enforcement particularly well over the years. Fragmented and complex operating systems have challenged police officers to manually enter information into multiple programs. And yet officers still struggle to retrieve the information they need — especially in the field, where it can be a matter of life or death. A large number of law enforcement agencies are still hindered by antiquated technologies. But agencies that have upgraded their operating and investigative systems have been tremendously effective in ensuring the safety of their citizens. Police forces like the Guardia Civil in Spain and An Garda Siochana in Ireland were early technology adopters and now benefit from some of the most efficient police operations and investigative systems in the world. These are the police forces of the future — the ones that others will be modeling themselves after in the years to come. Accenture recently studied police forces from around the world and found that in every region, police are hungry for new technology. They see tech such as analytics, biometrics (identification of humans by their characteristics or traits) and facial recognition as keys to effectively fighting crime and maximizing the time officers spend in the field. Despite the reality of reduced budgets, law enforcement agencies that adopt new technologies can prevent crimes more effectively and solve crimes faster. Video analytics What many people don’t know is that there’s a solid infrastructure of closed-circuit TV in […]

Security Tech Firms Hit Asia Casino Jackpot

Sydney – Asia’s new mega-casinos are driving sales and innovation in advanced surveillance technology, from chips with built-in radio transmitters to high-definition, multi-lens, digital cameras that can scan huge gaming floors and catch the deftest sleight of hand. Security solution providers such as German-Australian joint venture Dallmeier International, California-based Pelco, a unit of Schneider Electric, and Samsung Techwin, about 25% owned by Samsung Electronics, are among those reaping the benefits of Asia’s casino building boom. Tens of thousands of security cameras, including some of the most advanced commercially available, have been installed in the southern Chinese territory of Macau alone in the past five years, and many thousands more are on order for the multi billion dollar hotel-casino resorts still in the pipeline. “It’s big business. The camera market here has started to get very big… It’s probably the most demanding environment for a video surveillance system anywhere in the world,” said Craig Graham, Dallmeier International general manager for Asia. “Some of these guys (casino operators) have 700 tables and up to 1 000 slot machines, all of which have to be monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” Graham said Dallmeier had about 20% of the video surveillance market in Macau’s gaming industry, where its clients include Sands China , a subsidiary of Las Vegas Sands and one of six casino firms licensed to operate in the only place in China where casinos are legal. There are around 100 000 cameras installed in Macau’s casinos, according […]
