Small Chain Finds Success Upgrading To IP At Own Pace

LYNCHBURG, Va.—Family-owned and operated Quik-e Foods, based here, recently installed an IP camera in the rear of one of its 12 convenience stores. “The camera actually paid for itself on Day 2,” Quik-e Vice President Todd Burgess told Security Director News . The March Networks camera captured images of an employee stealing cigarettes by taking them out in trash bags through the back door. Quik-e, which also operates five automated car washes and a laundromat within about a 40-mile radius of Lynchburg, is a longtime March Networks end user, working with certified reseller and installer Integrated Technology Group. The chain gradually has been upgrading its March Networks NVRs to the next-gen 8000 Series Hybrid NVRs. The product is allowing Quik-e to move from analog cameras to IP cameras at its own pace as finances allow. Quik-e also plans to soon deploy March’s Searchlight for Retail video analytics software. The recent upgrade at Quik-e sites is “feature-rich,” Burgess said. “Our storage capacity has quadrupled. Where before I had systems that would only hold [images] for 30 days, I now can get up to three months. And it’s all user driven.” The ROI Burgess experienced is not unique, March Networks project manager Ali Mahmoud told Security Director News . Customers can use the system for 10 minutes each morning and capture $5,000 in thefts each week, he said. “The ROI is pretty quick,” and the fact that it’s hybrid so users don’t have to rip out old equipment is another plus, […]

Video Analytics Provides Solution For Telkom South Africa

12-02-2014 Telkom, South Africa’s largest integrated telecommunications company with over 400 stores, recently deployed the services of systems integrator Itec Digital to install Vi-System, Agent Vi’s real-time video analytics software, integrated with IP cameras from Axis Communications. Telkom sought a people counting solution with a comprehensive reporting structure to analyse footfall trends across the stores. They required accurate data regarding the number of people entering the stores across different time periods vs. revenue generated, to shed light on customer behaviour at the stores. At each Telkom site, 1-2 cameras (depending on whether there is 1 or 2 store entrances) from Axis Communications were installed and enabled with Vi-System to undertake people counting. As people counting draws the most accurate results when undertaken by cameras with a tilt angle (between lens position and ground) of 90 degrees, Axis M3203 (fixed dome network) IP cameras were installed directly above the entrances / exits. The Vi-Agent software component was embedded in the cameras. Itec Digital deployed Vi-System’s “People counting” rule as well as configuring automatic reports from Vi-System’s “Advanced Counting Reports” tool, to attain the requested data. Agent Vi’s people counting solution provides valuable data to Telkom South Africa regarding the number of customers in each store. Using Agent Vi’s advanced reporting tool, a daily footfall report is generated in each store, with presentation of hourly statistics. All the reports are sent to the Marketing Department at Telkom’s headquarters, and such data is imported into Telkom’s ERP system. These automatic reports supply […]

Interview With : Shlomi Palas, CEO of Bluesphere Interview With : Avigilon CEO Alex Fernandes talks about the acquisition of VideoIQ Interview With : Avigilon CEO Alex Fernandes talks about the acquisition of VideoIQ Views: 17 The grainy video that an old surveillance camera produces may not just be useless in determining who just made off with the goods, it could represent the simplest and most effective way for a business to reduce costs. High-definition video-surveillance, the kind done by Vancouver’s Avigilon, is winning more and more converts because the picture it produces is admissible in court, meaning a camera becomes more than a simple deterrent. So what’s the next step? Analytics. On December 31st, Avigilon announced it had acquired U.S.-based video analytics company VideoIQ, for $32-million. VideoIQ’s futuristic BRAIN technology (Bootstrap Response Active Intelligence Node/Network) learns and adapts, producing a surveillance system that actually gains functionality as it goes. Store Mannequins With RFID Tracking Now Recording Everything You Do

A well-dressed, picture-perfect  mannequin  stands still in a middle of a department store. She looks like any other life-size figure you’ve seen,  except she can see and hear you . It has cameras for eyes, audio recording capabilities, an embedded computer to analyze shoppers’ faces, and a modem to upload the data to a server. Called the EyeSee Mannequin , it’s meant to provide more data to retailers and department stores about shoppers, says its creator. “The EyeSee can tell if a shopper is male or female, his or her age range, how much time you spent looking at it and its outfit,” Max Catanese, the CEO of Almax, told ABC News. The EyeSee can also tell the ethnicity of shoppers. The goal, as you might assume, is for stores to know more about who is shopping and looking at the displays. How long you looked at one mannequin versus others, how many types of shoppers come into the store, etc. Video Store Mannequins With RFID Tracking Now Recording Everything You Do “The potential is huge. A store can really know who their client is. Let’s say you have eight floors and six floors are for women and two are for men, but you find out 80 percent of the shoppers are male. You want to change the ratio and switch it,” Catanese said. The computer inside the mannequin captures data about each of the shoppers it sees and then uploads that to a portal, so that the store can […]
