Increased Camera Surveillance, Bag Searches At 2014 Boston Marathon Route
FRAMINGHAM – Public safety officials announced plans for stepped up security measures at the 2014 Boston Marathon at a joint press conference with marathon organizers on Monday. There will be a significant increase in the public safety presence across the entire route this year but organizers say that they are doing everything they can to maintain the atmosphere of the race. A bulked-up public safety presence will be particularly noticeable at the start and finish lines of the race, as well as in popular spectator areas. "We are confident that the overall experience with runners and spectators will not be impacted and all will enjoy a fun, festive and family-oriented day," said Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Director Kurt Schwartz. A stepped-up video surveillance and bag inspection effort is planned for the event. Spectators are strongly discouraged from bringing over the shoulder bags or backpacks to any spot along the 26.2 mile route. Searches at screening points are likely according to officials and could lead to long delays at entry points. Spectators are advised to bring all their personal items to the racecourse in a clear plastic bag similar to one they would use for passing through airport security screening checkpoints. An enhanced video surveillance program will be in place along the racecourse. The plan includes the deployment of the portable surveillance cameras that were first used at the 2013 Independence Day celebration on the Boston Esplanade. Private businesses along the course have been contacted about possible involvement in the […]

Firetide Wireless Mesh Network To Deliver Real-time Video Surveillance For Malaysia MRT In Kuala Lumpur
A few weeks back, we told you about Bands Banding Together, a project being undertaken at Welcome to 1979, the studio complex owned and operated by Chris Mara (who also records the Upstairs at United sessions; go enjoy some video from the Cults and Bobby Rush sessions that went live last week, including the best non-Beatles version of "Come Together" I’ve heard yet). If you recall, Bands Banding Together began with an open call for participants interested in doing a live-to-lathe recording — as in direct-to-vinyl, zero undo, don’t screw up the last song or you have to do the whole thing over recording — who could register through Feb. 15. The next phase is a Facebook poll to determine who will get to participate in the project, and the ’79 camp tells us that the poll is live now! Of the 10 finalists, the five who receive the most votes will be making a unique direct-to-disc LP later this year. There’s a decent range of styles among the finalists, and a fairly broad geographic spread; three are Nashville bands, and the rest are from all across the eastern half of the U.S. Your Finalists: – East Side Americana pickers Don Gallardo and How Far West – Music City pan-American punks Max and The Wild Things – Northampton, Mass., folk rocker Jamie Kent , who hits my ear like The Wallflowers – Philadelphia’s Toy Soldiers , a little less country than Promised Land Sound but in similar territory – […]

Digital Watchdog Acquires Award Winning Innovative Security Designs IP-Camera Manufacturer
The NVRPRO Network Video Recorders from Genie CCTV come with Dual Network Cards which enable connection to different network segments. This maximises network efficiency and improves CCTV security the makers say. The Dual IP Application allows users to communicate between remote WAN access and the IP video system without compromise to the separated recording networks bandwidth. It also reduces susceptibility of unauthorised access to the recorder and the IP cameras. Besides the security and data protection, Genie says its product makes the management of video much easier and more flexible. A range of WAN IP addresses can be stored into the product management set up programme which only allows authorised security managers and users to access the system. Within the LAN IP Management System only administered LAN IP addresses can access video, meaning that non-registered LAN computer users cannot interfere with the system. Having a video network dedicated to one of the LAN ports on the recorder alleviates network bandwidth requirements, the manufacturers add, as only the IP cameras reside on this private ‘video network connection’. This means authorised WAN/ Intranet/Internet users do not ‘load traffic’ within the video surveillance network. Web: www.geniecctv.com
Samsung Techwin Video Surveillance Solution For Prestigious Business Centre
By Samsung Techwin Europe Limited NewsDesk on February 26, 2014 Paveletskaya Plaza (1) (2) Samsung Techwin cameras are at the heart of a network video surveillance system installed at Paveletskaya Plaza , one of the most prestigious business centres in Moscow. Despite tough worldwide trading conditions, Russia is enjoying strong growth in its economy and this is reflected in the increasing demand for office accommodation from international organisations, as well as locally based businesses in Moscow. Developers have responded to the shortfall in the availability of high quality commercial space with a dramatic acceleration in the number of building projects. By the end of 2014, Russia’s capital is expected to be able to boast four of the five tallest buildings in Europe, whilst many prestigious projects have already been completed, including the highly impressive Paveletskaya Plaza complex. Paveletskaya Plaza, which is constructed in the same architectural style as the adjacent Paveletskaya Railway Station, comprises two 12 storey and one 27 storeys tower. Collectively the buildings offer 65,000 m² of office accommodation fully fitted with the most modern technologies to provide tenants, which include Adecco, Allianz, Nestle and Tommy Hilfiger, with the most comfortable and stress-free working conditions. WD Launches Purple Line Of HDDs For Surveillance Market
The higher price usually has a lot more to do with data integrity than it does performance. The surveillance drives targeted for use with always-on cameras and audio recording need to perform consistently with little room for failure due to wear & tear; so they need to have quality moving parts, better tolerance on the manufacturing specs and survive for a higher number of read/writes more so than be fast. I don’t think this is the right solution to that problem. I just put together a security camera system recently. The software supported initially writing the video files in one location, but archiving it in a different location. I so put a SSD and regular HDD in the system. The video received from the cameras is initially written to the SSD. After 3 days it gets archived (in batch) on the HDD. 1) You don’t typically think of SSDs in this particular application – there’s no need for blazing speed. But there is a need for constant concurrent writes to multiple files, which is something SSDs do a lot better than HDDs. I initially decided to go with the SSD because I noticed the computer frequently stuttered and lagged during competing read requests from the original HDD. 2) The HDD only gets written to about 4-6 times a day. At all other times, it goes to sleep. So I just grabbed a consumer "green" drive. The HDD is going to get less use than a home desktop computer HDD. […]

In New Jersey, A Call For More Video Surveillance At Atlantic City Casinos
Long view of the Maryland Live Casino poker room. Facial images have been blurred by the casino to protect player identities. (Courtesy photo.) Long view of the Maryland Live poker room, via one of the casino’s pan-tilt-zoom surveillance cameras. Faces in the screencap have been blurred by casino officials to protect player identities. (Courtesy photo.) In my story on the front page of Sunday’s print edition about the surveillance operation at Maryland Live Casino , I mentioned that Rob Norton, the property’s president and general manager, asked me at one point if I’d ever seen “Casino.” He was specifically referring to the scene where Robert De Niro — who plays Tangiers boss Ace Rothstein – explains the way things work in the gambling world: In Vegas, everybody’s gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the casino manager. And the eye in the sky is watching us all. “You can quote from that,” Norton told me. “It’s still pretty accurate.” But the notion that every casino is watching (or at least recording) everybody, at all times, isn’t exactly true. Consider what’s happening in New Jersey, where one lawmaker has proposed legislation that would require Atlantic City casinos to put surveillance […]

(OTC: DIRV), a company focused on ownership and management of leading video and security technology companies, today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, DirectView Security Systems, Inc. ("DirectView Security"), has begun early stage discussions with several marijuana industry companies to provide a number of potential video surveillance and access control solutions. DirectView Security sees tremendous growth potential for the Company in this rapidly evolving industry as companies scramble to develop a foothold and meet the ever changing legal requirements for security for both growers and dispensaries. According to several published reports typical dispensaries will need to employ dozens of security cameras, motion detectors, infrared sensors, and 24/7 recording. At most dispensaries, those entering must pass through three doors, show ID and present a verified doctor’s note. With the sale of medical marijuana being approved and rolled out in over 18 states and the sale of marijuana for recreational use already approved in Colorado and Washington, this industry is experiencing rapid growth. According to an April 2013 article published in the Wall Street Journal, an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 businesses produce marijuana legally under state laws. In each state a marijuana related company must meet strict guidelines for security and these requirements often vary. In Massachusetts, for example, according to a February 2014 article in the Boston Globe, the law requires video cameras to be installed and operating in all areas that contain marijuana: in parking lots, safes, vaults, sales […]

Coast Guard to propose cruise ship video surveillance rules
Nearly four years after passage of a comprehensive cruise safety law, the U.S. Coast Guard is getting ready to propose a rule for three of the trickiest provisions in the legislation. The proposed rule, expected out in June, will outline how cruise lines can comply with a requirement in the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act that they deploy technology for “capturing images of passengers or detecting passengers who have fallen overboard.” Also addressed in the rule will be how a cruise ship’s video surveillance system should be operated to document crimes on the ship and assist in their later prosecution. Advocates of the law say the provisions will make passengers feel more secure about taking a cruise. But the cruise industry has raised red flags about the cost and practicality of applying the law. In one instance, a cruise line told auditors at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that just doubling the time it keeps video footage from 14 to 28 days would cost an extra $21.8 million. Most of the 15 provisions in the 2010 act, such as peepholes in cabin doors and standard rail heights, had been translated into Coast Guard guidance by June 2011. The remaining ones involved complex technologies and, in some cases, language in the law that didn’t set a clear benchmark for gauging compliance. In the case of detecting when persons fall overboard, the law called for compliance “to the extent that such technology is available.” The Coast Guard asked for input […]

Aimetis Improved Video Surveillance System For ‘Better Way Miami’
http://www.asmag.com/project/China50/bullet.htm Source: Aimetis Symphony | Date: 12/31/2013 Related tags: Aimetis , surveillance Summary Better Way has been providing services for over a quarter century, and has earned the reputation of being one of South Florida’s most respected recovery agencies. Better Way offers a full continuum of care in an approachable, safe setting. Monitoring ad recording all activity inside and outside is essential for an environment where mental health client, counselors and operations staffs are constantly in close quarters. The ability to review video evidence of medication storage and dispensing, client and staff interactions, and perimeter security was critical in ensuring the safety of everyone and the organization itself. Challenge Before installing Aimetis Symphony , there was no form of intelligent video monitoring for staff safety procedures, theft protections and facility monitoring. The outdated CCTV system in place was failing and did not have record or alarm capabilities needed to reliably record, easily search and intelligently analyze multiple incidents a day. The facility is exposed to a high risk level because of the number of people entering and exiting the premises each day as well as the activity within the building. Solution A Wide Area Network (WAN) was utilized connecting the entire facility while providing over 30 days recording history of many HD and standard cameras. Automation of alarms at exits outside normal hours was set up to ensure that the proper staffs were aware and informed of any changes in the facility. Utilizing video analytics, Better Way Miami configured […]

Frontier (Hamburg NY) Bus Vandalism Spurs Security Improvements
The extensive bus garage vandalism in the Frontier School District in October has led to a $20,000 security system at the district bus garage. The vandalism forced the shutdown of schools for a day. Add to that the $8,900 damage allegedly caused by the 18-year-old former student charged in the vandalism spree, plus at least another $10,000 in estimated overtime expenses tied to a seven-day-a-week night watch crew. The result is nearly $40,000 in total expenses because of the vandalism – linked to a former student who had dropped out of school. “Our bus transportation security system is up and running, so let’s hope no one tries to get through it,” School Business Manager Richard F. Calipari said. “We’ve secured our facilities and outdoor storage of buses.” The new security system became operational in late November and includes direct video surveillance and alarm trips to a security company. The new cameras also are linked into the Hamburg town police. The latest update came at last week’s School Board meeting. Afterward, interim Superintendent Paul G. Hashem was asked whether the district can recoup some of the money from the student who was charged. But Hashem said the district will not be able to recoup the costs. “He’s a young kid – 18 years old. He’s definitely had a hard life and spent 50 days in jail,” he said. Hashem, after consulting with an assistant district attorney, suggested counseling and community service for the former student. Buses had to be cleaned. […]

Video Surveillance Cameras: The Good, The Bad, And The Hype – Lessons From Boston
We hear it again and again. Video surveillance cameras can accomplish what humans can’t. There’s simply no way, we are told, in a situation like the Boston Marathon bombing, with all the thousands of people in attendance, to be able to track suspects without video footage of the scene. To try to rely merely on eyewitnesses in that case is just too difficult, if not impossible, a real case of sensory overload. The problem is that it’s not entirely true. Law enforcement, through video surveillance footage, clearly narrowed down who the suspects were. However, part of the reason they could identify them was because one of the injured, a man who lost both legs to the bomb, clearly identified an individual putting down a bag just before the blast. With the help of a sketch artist and subsequent video footage, a suspect was clearly identified. Instead of being able to plan another attack, the two brothers were suddenly on the run, and in a matter of couple of days one was dead, another captured. However, it was the combination of human intelligence and video surveillance technology that made this possible, not exclusively one or the other. After this terrible tragedy, some have asked, “But does this now mean that cameras will now be everywhere? What about privacy?” It’s hard to believe that in the year 2013 that question is still being asked. The reality is: cameras more and more are everywhere. Try to walk through any major metropolitan area […]

The Eyes Have It: Mounties Step Up Video Surveillance Of Parliament Hill
Security cameras are seen on a lightpost following renovations to the entranceways to Parliament Hill Friday December 6, 2013 in Ottawa. It’s the time when tourists usually begin posing for family photos with the newly strung holiday lights on Parliament Hill. This year the festive visits will almost certainly be captured by RCMP lenses, too.THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld OTTAWA – It’s the time when tourists usually begin posing for family photos with the newly strung holiday lights on Parliament Hill. This year the festive visits will almost certainly be captured by RCMP lenses, too. The Mounties have recently added new video cameras near pedestrian entrances and a vehicle screening facility along Wellington Street, the boulevard in front of the Parliament Buildings. The RCMP and its Hill security partners have also bowed to the wishes of the federal privacy commissioner by posting signs on bollards that read: 24 hour video surveillance for security of the grounds. The notices mark the end of a behind-the-scenes tussle between the commissioner’s office and the RCMP about whether people visiting Parliament Hill should be advised of the unblinking electronic eyes that expand video coverage of the precinct. “This is a positive outcome stemming from our work to achieve this with the RCMP and others involved in managing Parliament Hill, including Public Works and the National Capital Commission,” said Scott Hutchinson, a spokesman for the privacy commissioner. The commissioner has been concerned for some time about the plans to add 134 cameras to the existing […]
