ASSA ABLOY has sold its Wood Door business in the US to Masonite. The ASSA ABLOY Wood Door business consists of two companies Graham Wood Doors, based in Mason City, Iowa and The Maiman Company, based in Springfield, Missouri with a total of 275 employees. Graham is a manufacturer of flush architectural wood doors and Maiman is a manufacturer of thermal fused doors and stile and rail doors. The business had a turnover in 2017 of approximately USD 70 million. The transaction will have a positive effect on ASSA ABLOY?s operating margin and be neutral to EPS.

When Crafthouse USA CEO and founder Evan Matz moved from Florida to Virginia several years ago, he realized that the sunny, tropical weather had not followed him there. In the winter, at some of his first restaurants, he noticed an issue with the entry. At one property, as customers entered through a pair of swinging doors, the cold winter air rushed inside and everyone in the dining room wanted to be far away from the entrance. At another location, he had a vestibule with two swinging doors; this better controlled the influx of cold air but took up a lot of expensive, interior space. Matz decided back then that he needed a different entrance solution for his restaurants – a revolving door.

It?s graduation time for high-schoolers and college students alike. The streets here are awash in young people in suits, prom dresses, and graduation garb. I love to see those fresh faces full of excitement, and a little apprehension, about the future. But it is not lost on me that, in response to recent events, while so many young people are experiencing this important rite of passage, many of us are having —or not having— difficult conversations about school safety. For anyone avoiding the conversation, it might help to know what the research about gun violence in schools is telling us. The current debate around school safety is centered on mass shootings. But research to be published later this year by Professor James Alan Fox and doctoral student Emma Fridel shows that mass school shootings are rare events. They have found that, on average, mass murders in the U.S. occur between 20 and 30 times per year while, on average, only about one of those incidents takes place at a school.
