Company Valuations For Systems Integrators: Recurring Revenue, Technology, Vertical Markets, Service, All Affect Value

Much has been written about how security dealers, with their profit-rich recurring monthly revenue (RMR), are valued in the marketplace, but the factors that go into valuating systems integration companies has been covered to a lesser extent. RMR — if any exists in the integrator business — certainly plays a role in determining value, but a distinction is made between RMR from monitoring and RMR from service. There are other similarities in how the two types of businesses are valued, such as service efficiencies and the composition of customer contracts. Differences exist in the type of technology the integrator offers and the vertical markets that comprise the client base. According to Bill Polk, managing director, CapitalSource, Chevy Chase, Md., the primary driver of valuations is the liquidity of capital markets. While the current economy has restrained the flow of capital to a degree, Polk believes low default rates characteristic of the security industry have and will continue to lead to rising valuations. “We’re in an environment where debt markets have come back,” Polk says. “The high-yield bond market has been extremely active over last 12 months and this is driving up value. Falling default rates, more competition and generally favorable economic reports are driving pricing down, which is making it cheaper to borrow.” Polk adds that in such a market, “the security industry has proven over the last 24 months a safe port in a storm.” Still, the availability of capital varies greatly for systems integrators ranging from the […]

Interview With Alexey Khitrov, President, Speechpro

Peter O’Neill, President, findBIOMETRICS (fB): Can you please give us a little bit of background on the company? Alexey Khitrov, President, Speechpro (SP):  Speechpro is the North American subsidiary of the Speech Technology Center . The company was founded in 1990 and has been around for over 20 years. Two key factors separate us from other companies. One is our emphasis on R&D. We do have probably one of the biggest R&D capabilities in voice biometrics with about 150 people in R&D alone (total staff is 400) including 30 PhD’s on board. The other thing is the breadth of the offering and the breadth of the technological expertise that we can bring to the customers. We have products in everything audio from multichannel recordings, speech analytics, signal processing, both text-dependent, text -independent voice verification (1:1) and voice identification (1:N). So the focus on R&D and the breadth of our offering are the two things that separate us from the rest. We have a long history in law enforcement segment of voice biometric market (including some of the world’s largest deployments) and recently introduced our solutions to the Enterprise customers. fB: Can you tell us a little bit about one of your latest product releases, the VoiceKey.OnePass? SP: Absolutely. So VoiceKey.OnePass is an innovative idea that brings together different biometric modalities into a single verification process. The idea here is to make verification in the mobile environment or online as easy as possible while increasing the security. So what we […]

Ypsilanti Township Wants Security Cameras In Every Neighborhood

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – For the past few years there has been another set of eyes looking over the West Willow neighborhood in Ypsilanti Township, providing those who live there, such as Tony Slaughter, an added sense of security. "When they put the security cameras up I kind of thought crime would decrease and it kind of has in a way," he said. Township leaders say it’s a good crime-fighting tool. It has helped police track down a sexual predator who was preying on children. Right now there are 10 security cameras up in certain areas of Ypsilanti Township. Township leaders want security cameras in every neighborhood. Mike Radzik, the director of the Office of Community Standards, knows for some neighbors it’s a hard sell because of privacy concerns. "We are recording images that a police officer would see if he or she were standing in the same place. They are only in public places," he said. The township still is working on a cost-effective plan to get the cameras up in more places. "The township will invest in the infrastructure, actually put the cameras out and deploy them and there will be a special assessment on the homes in the neighborhood for the operating expense going forward, which will be a very nominal fee for this measure of public safety," Radzik. For Slaughter, now he knows that when he’s not keeping watch of his neighborhood, something else is. It’s a warning to criminals to stay away.

In New Jersey, A Call For More Video Surveillance At Atlantic City Casinos

Long view of the Maryland Live poker room, via one of the casino’s pan-tilt-zoom surveillance cameras. Faces in the screencap have been blurred by casino officials to protect player identities. (Courtesy photo.) In my story on the front page of Sunday’s print edition about the surveillance operation at Maryland Live Casino , I mentioned that Rob Norton, the property’s president and general manager, asked me at one point if I’d ever seen “Casino.” He was specifically referring to the scene where Robert De Niro — who plays Tangiers boss Ace Rothstein – explains the way things work in the gambling world: In Vegas, everybody’s gotta watch everybody else. Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players. The box men are watching the dealers. The floor men are watching the box men. The pit bosses are watching the floor men. The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses. The casino manager is watching the shift bosses. I’m watching the casino manager. And the eye in the sky is watching us all. “You can quote from that,” Norton told me. “It’s still pretty accurate.” But the notion that every casino is watching (or at least recording) everybody, at all times, isn’t exactly true. Consider what’s happening in New Jersey, where one lawmaker has proposed legislation that would require Atlantic City casinos to put surveillance […]

Video-Ready Servers From Secure Logiq Promise More Performance At Lower Cost

By Tom Reeve on February 26, 2014 SecureLogiq, manufacturer of high specification video servers, has relaunched its product range to provide 12 off-the-shelf server solutions for HD video applications. Previously the company specialised in bespoke solutions including its top-end server configuration that is 4U high and can record 1000 HD CCTV cameras (1080p) at full frame rate continuously and store the images for 30 days. The company’s servers have been used on projects such as the London 2012 Olympics, the London Shard ANPR system, Cross Rail and Mersey ferries. We spoke to SecureLogiq sales director Robin Hughes, formerly business development director at Avigilon for over six years. Robin Hughes Hughes told us that the new product range has been designed to provide customers with an easy to understand range of products that would scale up from entry level according to their needs. The product range comprises 1U, 2U and 3U servers which have been fitted out with high specification components and fine tuned for handling high quality HD video. As a result, the machines are able to record more channels at a faster rate and store it for longer than comparable size servers. Hughes said the company is responding to a requirement in the market for high spec servers that wasn’t being addressed by traditional IT servers. “The feedback we have had from the market is that this is the missing piece in the HD jigsaw puzzle,” said Hughes. “People are telling us that they want a less expensive, […]

Surveillance Video Was Properly Admitted, Court Rules

A three-judge appellate panel in the Seventh District recently affirmed the judgment of the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas. The judges ruled that Shawn Green was properly convicted on charges of felonious assault, assault, resisting arrest and possession of cocaine. Green challenged the trial court’s decision to admit video surveillance footage of the incident leading to his arrest. According to the factual and procedural history provided by the Seventh District, Officers Quinn and Mulligan responded to a call about an armed man who was fighting with two females in a bar in Youngstown on March 15, 2012. The officers entered the bar and approached Green from two different directions. Quinn testified that she could see a “bulge” in Green’s pocket and believed it was a firearm. As she approached, Quinn reached for the suspected gun but Green turned and punched her in the throat, causing her head to hit the wall behind her. Quinn tried to subdue Green with her Taser as she was falling but accidentally hit Mulligan. Quinn passed out and when she regained consciousness she said she saw Mulligan struggling to control Green. Mulligan testified that, due to his struggle with Green, he did not initially realize that he had been struck by the Taser. Additional officers eventually responded to the scene and, together, they were able to subdue Green. The bulge in his pocket turned out to be marijuana, cocaine and packaging baggies. Quinn was treated for a back sprain, neck sprain and contusions. […]

Visa Is Experimenting With Biometric Payment Systems

S Apple’s iPhone 5S has a fingerprint scanner, and now Samsung’s revealed a print-reading Galaxy S5 . Each allows for payments to be verified using a swipe of your digits. Is this the possible future of all transactions? Perhaps, and Visa is now exploring the area too to ensure it will be ready for the possible sea-change. "Smartphones equipped with fingerprint scanners are definitely useful. There are all kinds of technologies that we are seeing, and a lot of innovation in this space. We’re working with these technologies, and they are all very interesting," said Jon White, Visa’s Head of Marketing, Mobile Strategic Alliances. For the time being at least, it seems any such system would still need to be linked to a mobile device, and Visa’s current challenge is separating mobile device access authentication systems from the payment credentials ? were someone to infiltrate one system through biometric readings, Visa want to ensure your bank balance would not be compromised. "It’s a different consideration between drawing a squiggle to unlock a phone or putting in a four-digit password to access my mobile to what’s required to access my bank account," continued White. "Secure management of payment credentials are the priority. I think there will be moves to form partnerships in this space though. That will continue, and we will pursue these technologies, but we need these multiple layers of encryption to preserve customer trust and integrity." Consumer attitudes also need to be considered ? "Do users really want […]

Idaho Biometric Protection Bill To Get Full Debate

Biometric protection bill to get full debate BOISE — Businesses that collect and use hair samples, finger prints and retina scans to identify their customers could face tough sanctions for inappropriately handling such material, under a measure headed to the Idaho House. The State Affairs Committee Tuesday morning approved new privacy standards for full debate. Republican Rep. Ed Morse of Hayden Lake fears technological advances in collecting biometric information have outstripped laws governing how that information can be used. Morse says his bill, which carries with it fines of $1,000 for abusing biometric data including selling it without permission, helps "level the playing field." Though garbage companies collect trash with traces of DNA, the bill leaves them alone. And though this measure deals with the private sector, Morse says governments’ collection of data remains "fertile ground" for future regulation. Print

High-Capacity Digital Surveillance Storage: The Economies of Scale

Massive Storage Capacities Introduction Savvy security professionals are migrating to digital video solutions in droves, and with good reason: surveillance digital video recorders (SDVR) boast an unprecedented combination of video quality, storage capacity and flexibility, enabling SDVR-based systems to deliver an impressive range of enhanced capabilities: Higher image resolution More active cameras Longer archival periods Intelligent video recognition Abundant storage capacity is a fundamental enabler of such capabilities, and it is here that some video surveillance deployments can go amiss. In an effort to minimize costs, some SDVR systems may utilize multiple low-cost, low-capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) to meet their storage requirements. On its surface, this approach appears to be a viable option to reduce storage expenditures. But initial purchase price is only one part of total cost of ownership, and in other respects this budget-drive approach actually inflates SDVR system costs. Specifically, deploying a plethora of inexpensive desktop-class drives consumes more drive slots, requires more power (while producing more unwanted heat) and significantly reduces system reliability. In many SDVRs there are only a limited number of drive slots available, and budget drives lack sufficient capacity for more and/or higher-quality video streams or longer retention of video data. The solution? Scale up capacity with a smaller number of large (1TB, 2TB or 3TB) HDDs , purpose-built for surveillance storage duty. The benefits of this approach are both significant and multifold: Compact, more space-efficient SDVR systems can meet the elevated capacity needs of sophisticated surveillance environments, power consumption and […]

Guangdong Province Selected For First Demonstration Of China National SVAC Video Surveillance Standard

The announcement mentions that continuous advances in the performance of video-surveillance equipment and applications, including devices and systems, have been accompanied by a variety of formats and standards, which have reduced government’s ability to protect public safety and share, transmit, and store image data in networks. Therefore, an urgent need has arisen for networking and image coding techniques that follow a unified national standard. At the same time, China has sought to develop its domestic security industry, supported by domestically owned intellectual property rights, which follow uniform national standards that support higher image coding and video encryption. To achieve these goals, the Ministry of Public Security selected Guangdong province as the first province for a demonstration of the SVAC video-surveillance standard. As of the end of 2013, Guangdong province had already completed installed a total 1.81 million image-acquisition sites, comprised of two different types, which have played an important role in the administration of public security. About Guangdong Province Guangdong Province possesses the largest economy in terms of GDP and some of the strongest scientific and technological capabilities and the most developed foreign trade in China. As the pioneer in China’s economic reform and opening, Guangdong province maintains rapid and sustainable development of its economy, marks constant improvement in its degree of openness, and ranks first in China according to many economic indicators. The province’s GDP contributes about one-eighth of national GDP, and has ranked the largest for many years. The value of Guangdong’s total import and export trade represents approximately […]

3M Cogent Biometric Fingerprint Technology Integrated Into Entrust IdentityGuard

February 24, 2014 – by Peter B. Counter      As is often said, the key to biometric adoption lies in a delicate balance between a promised increase of security and a decrease in the friction users experience when interacting with it. Essentially: next generation authentication is in high demand, but its biggest obstacle in adoption lies in how easy it is to deploy and use. Today a new collaboration was announced between Entrust and 3M Cogent , leveraging that latter’s fingerprint biometric technology as logical access control solution for workstations via the former’s IdentityGuard software authentication platform. It’s a combination that stands to provide customers looking for a strong biometric access control solution for their organization with FBI trusted authentication (the solution satisfies CJIS requirements  necessary for law enforcement deployment) that is proven to be convenient. Entrust President David Wagner explains why the companies are well suited as partners, saying, “Entrust and 3M share the same standards and vision for authenticating identities. Integrating proven 3M biometric authentication is another step in the platform’s evolution — a stride that continues our focus on properly protecting customer identities.” Both new and existing IdentityGuard customers will be able to benefit from the biometric boost to security. This allows for streamlined and strong logical access control for cloud and internal systems. Teresa Wu, who manages 3M Cogent’s global biometric portfolio expands on the collaboration: “Entrust and 3M have complementary offerings in the identity management marketplace — from digital certificate management to identity document […]
