Why We Must Continue To Turn The Camera On Police

When MIT grad student Steve Mann began wearing a computer and a head-mounted camera every moment of the day in 1981, he wasn’t thinking of Black Lives Matter, racism, or police violence. But Mann, now a professor at the University of Toronto, may have given us the key concept for understanding the role of ubiquitous cameras in documenting police violence against people of color. Thirty-five years ago, Mann began thinking about a future that seems increasingly real—a world in which cameras are ubiquitous and can store and share what they see. Mann believed that his Eyetap system would be helpful in enhancing human capability and memory, allowing complete recall of past events. But he also predicted that it would have powerful social effects as millions of people with connected cameras could collectively hold authorities responsible for their misdeeds.

Video Surveillance Storage Market: Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2016 – 2022

Use of video surveillance in organizations across each vertical is growing, mounting up new challenges related to handling surveillance systems and storing the exponentially increasing volume of raw video footage. Many of the large enterprises use more than 100 cameras on an average, which are functioning 24×7 around the clock – with no end in sight. The number of surveillance cameras and the worth of video analytics are only projected to grow and so is the need for video surveillance storage. Commercial expansion triggers maximum investment in video surveillance; higher capacity storage media is a vital prerequisite for these system upgrades. With the advancement in storage technologies over the last decade and introduction of IP-cameras, the process of video surveillance became simpler and the demand for video surveillance storage amplified.

BCDVideo Delivers New Avaya-Based Shortest Path Bridging Network Switches: And Why You Should Care

Some technical professionals may take offense to the following statement, but our technical tendency whenever a server/NVR starts to drop frames or “go black” is to start dropping camera resolutions, drop frame rates, or drop camera bitrates, and/or add more servers/NVRs. So little attention, historically, has been paid to the actual ‘network’ equipment in these network video recording solutions. Not so un-noticed, video surveillance puts such a tremendous load on I.P. networks (just ask the corporate network admin) and has been a major bottleneck component since the first network surveillance camera came online. Where typical corporate networks have been more plug-and-play in their usage, video surveillance pushes the geek level of network management to a much higher level of sophistication. If we are honest with ourselves, this intimidates many physical security/video surveillance professionals. To be fair, these security professionals are not computer networking experts. Trying to understand the impact RTSP has on a network or the importance of every frame making it from end-to-end has not been as important to some smaller installations. However, when keeping a video feed pumping with no interruption is important then it becomes vital to understand the network configurations.

4 Ways Intelligent Video Analytics Enhance Body-Worn Cameras

Body-worn cameras have been a growing trend in the law enforcement community for the last several years. Yet, as agencies worldwide establish body-worn camera programs, they are challenged with how to access, manage, protect, search, and easily share that video. The hundreds to even millions of hours of video that agencies —depending on size— are capturing weekly is simply overwhelming them and complicates compliance with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Criminal Justice Information Standards (CJIS) requirements. Agencies can deploy Video Analytics solutions to help them face these challenges in four key ways.
