Boon Edam Inc., a global leader in security entrances and architectural revolving doors, announced that Mt. Sinai Hospital in Toronto has achieved success in reducing wind tunnel issues within its high-volume, three entrance public corridor into the hospital?s main entrance. Dor-Control Craftsmen, Ltd. installed the entrances and oversees on-going maintenance needs. Toronto is known for its cold and blustery winter months. Prior to February 2016, Mt. Sinai Hospital employees, patients, and visitors often had to endure freezing wind tunnel conditions within a street level entrance corridor linking University and Murray Streets. Wind conditions could be so severe that employees using a smaller, employee-designated swinging entrance at times could not manually open that door.

In its latest enforcement action in the realm of the Internet of Things, the Federal Trade Commission filed suit against D-Link Corporation, a Taiwan-based computer networking equipment manufacturer and its U.S. subsidiary, alleging that the defendants failed to employ adequate security measures for their wireless routers and surveillance cameras. Although D-Link promoted the security of its routers with claims like “EASY TO SECURE” and “ADVANCED NETWORK SECURITY,” the company neglected to take easy steps to avoid security flaws, the agency asserted in its California federal court complaint. According to the agency, D-Link accepted hard-coded login credentials and the use of “command injection,” which allowed remote attackers to take control of routers by sending commands over the Internet.

The San Jose City Council is considering a proposal to install over 39,000 ?smart streetlights.? A pilot program is already underway. These smart streetlights are not themselves a surveillance technology. But they have ports on top that, in the future, could accommodate surveillance technology, such as video cameras and microphones. EFF and our allies sent a letter to the San Jose City Council urging them to adopt an ordinance to ensure democratic control of all of that community?s surveillance technology decisions?including whether to plug spy cameras into the ports of smart streetlights.

Our story below is a good-deal different from that of the Irish-American Francie Nolan found in the 1943 classic. But when you consider what Michael Kaplinsky, Ph.D., and Vladimir Berezin, Ph.D., created in 2003 -originally from Russia- you should be similarly inspired. Axis Communications is credited with being the first IP-camera manufacturer back in 1996. And today there are a plethora of IP-camera manufacturers that have jumped into the market. Security.World has the count at over 350 camera manufacturers. Interestingly, many of those manufacturers entered the market early when it was still ?standard definition? resolution. Companies such as IQeye became a very popular ?SD? camera manufacturer. They rose quickly and gained significant market success. And they also made a wager on the industry that ?megapixel? would not catch on and become viable. Then there were companies —such as Arecont Vision— that made just the opposite wager. Megapixel was going to be ?the norm? and the two well-educated company founders put everything they could into building a megapixel camera manufacturer that would deliver on the promise of high-definition resolution.

Revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 2017 decreased 39% to $6.6 million as compared to $10.9 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2016. The $4.3 million decrease in the current quarter included a $3.0 million, or 35%, decrease in sales in the Americas market and a $1.3 million, or 56%, decrease in EMEA market sales. Revenues weakened across all market segments due principally to a continuing reliance on legacy product offerings and the continuing market effects of previously reported camera line issues. Order intake for the current quarter decreased $5.9 million to $5.8 million as compared to $11.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2016.

Participants had one month to submit their integration ideas to Milestone and those ideas would then be reviewed and narrowed down to five finalists.
